The maritime blockchain and AI startup MarinaChain, which built its foundation in Busan’s logistics sector, is drawing industry spotlight as its technological recognition on a global stage was belatedly made public.

According to Busan-based startup MarinaChain on Feb. 24, the company became the first Korean firm named a finalist at the CMA CGM Startup Awards 2025, hosted by global shipping giant CMA CGM and accelerator ZEBOX. While it fell short of taking the top prize, the recognition marks a major milestone as a regional tech startup whose capabilities were validated by decision-makers at a global carrier. MarinaChain develops AI-powered solutions that process operational data and documentation to help shipping firms meet international carbon rules.

Its flagship solution, MarinaNet, automates compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) and European Union (EU) regulations. It handles complex mandates under a unified platform, including the IMO Data Collection System (DCS), Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), EU Maritime Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), and EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).

The company highlighted that its AI automation eliminates repetitive data entry and verification among ship crews, shoreside operations, and verification agencies. By shortening compliance preparation that previously took months, the solution offers immediate applicability for global shipping companies.

Looking ahead, MarinaChain plans to broaden its services into European Union Allowance (EUA) brokerage, biofuel adoption consulting, and supply-chain ESG reporting, while expanding its client base across South Korea, Singapore, and Indonesia. Its long-term goal is to accelerate global outreach with an integrated AI platform for shipping, ports, and logistics.
